Weekends — Elkhorn Slough Ecological Reserve. Docent-led walks are scheduled every Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Binoculars and bird books are available for the public to borrow at no cost. The visitor center and main overlook are fully accessible. Day use fee is $4.32 per person, age 16 and older. Groups of 10 or more should schedule a separate tour. Every Monday (except holidays) — Volunteer Stewardship Field Crew Mondays at Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, 1700 Elkhorn Road, Royal Oaks (95076), 10 a.m. to noon. Help preserve natural habitat by collecting seeds, planting, maintaining trails and weeding introduced species. Various Days — Guided Wetland Tours by Reservation at Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, 3207 Rutherford Road, Gridley (95948). A wildlife naturalist will lead groups from a school or an organization through the diverse wetlands of the Gray Lodge Wildlife Area. General information includes wildlife identification, behavior patterns and conservation efforts. Tours can include requested information along a half-mile walking route. 12 —Trout Fest at Moccasin Creek Hatchery, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Moccasin Creek Hatchery, 15300 Highway 49, Moccasin (95347). Trout Fest is a free event that introduces people to the basics of trout fishing. CDFW staff and volunteers will instruct participants on how to tie basic fishing knots, rig poles, cast, and how to handle, clean and cook trout. Other activities include the river maze, feeding fish, a bean bag toss, face painting, fly fishing and fly tying. Youths under the age of 15 can try to catch a fish. All fishing tackle and gear is provided. Admission, parking and activities are free. 12 — Earth Day Festival at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve,18000 Pacific Coast Highway, Huntington Beach (92647). Entry is free and parking is available within walking distance to the reserve. Visitors will be able to view educational displays and learn about wetlands, watersheds, conservation, plants and animals. 15 — 2014/2015 Hunting License and Tags Go On Sale. Items can be purchased at CDFW license sales offices or license agents, online at www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/ols or by phone at (800) 565-1458. Hunters can purchase hunting licenses, validations, tags and apply for CDFW’s Big Game Drawing. All applications for the Big Game Drawing must be submitted and the sales transaction completed before midnight on June 2, 2014. Customers can also contact their closest CDFW license sales office for more information.
